π§Ύ Description:
Vinblastine is a vinca alkaloid chemotherapy agent used in the treatment of various cancers. It is a cytotoxic drug that disrupts microtubule function, preventing cancer cell division.
βοΈ Mechanism of Action:
Vinblastine binds to tubulin, a structural protein in microtubules, and inhibits mitotic spindle formation, leading to:
- Mitotic arrest (cell stuck in metaphase)
- Apoptosis (cell death)
Itβs cell cycle-specific, acting during the M-phase.
π¨ Precautions:
- Regular blood counts needed (WBC monitoring)
- Avoid extravasation β can cause severe local tissue damage
- Hepatic impairment: requires dose reduction
- Use with caution in elderly or debilitated patients
π Drug Interactions:
- Azole antifungals, erythromycin, and protease inhibitors may β vinblastine levels (CYP3A4 inhibitors)
- May interact with other myelosuppressive drugs (β risk of neutropenia)
π¦ Storage:
- Store at 2β8Β°C (refrigerated)
- Protect from light
- Do not freeze
- After dilution: use promptly or store refrigerated for up to 24 hours
π§ββοΈ Patient Advice:
- Report fever, sore throat (signs of low WBC)
- Maintain good oral hygiene (to prevent stomatitis)
- Avoid constipation β use laxatives if needed
- Avoid live vaccines during treatment
