Neostigmine Injection 0.5 mg/mL

💉 Neostigmine Injection 0.5 mg/mL

📘 Description:

Neostigmine Injection 0.5 mg/mL is a parenteral anticholinesterase medication used to reverse the effects of non-depolarizing muscle relaxants after surgery and to treat myasthenia gravis, urinary retention, and paralytic ileus. It enhances neuromuscular transmission by preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine.

🔬 Formulation:

  • Active Ingredient: Neostigmine methylsulfate
  • Strength: 0.5 mg per mL
  • Dosage Form: Injectable solution
  • Route: Intravenous (IV), Intramuscular (IM), or Subcutaneous (SC)
  • Common Brands: Neostigmin®, Prostigmin®

🧪 Nature / Mechanism of Action:

  • Drug Class: Reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor
  • Mechanism: Inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, resulting in increased acetylcholine levels at the neuromuscular junction, thereby improving skeletal muscle tone and contraction.

🩺 Indications / Uses:

  • Reversal of non-depolarizing neuromuscular blockade (e.g., rocuronium, vecuronium, atracurium) during anesthesia recovery
  • Treatment of myasthenia gravis (adjunctive use)
  • Postoperative urinary retention
  • Postoperative paralytic ileus

Advantages:

  • Rapid onset of action (within 5–15 minutes)
  • Widely used in anesthesia recovery rooms to safely restore breathing and motor function
  • Effective for short-term management of myasthenia gravis exacerbations
  • Can be co-administered with atropine or glycopyrrolate to counter muscarinic side effects

⚠️ Precautions:

  • Use cautiously in patients with:
    • Asthma or COPD (can increase secretions and bronchoconstriction)
    • Bradycardia or heart block
    • Seizure disorders
    • Renal impairment (dose adjustment needed)

Combine with anticholinergics (e.g., atropine, glycopyrrolate) to reduce risks like bradycardia, salivation, and GI cramps.

📦 Storage:

  • Store at 2°C to 8°C (refrigerated)
  • Protect from light
