Loperamide Tablet 2 mg

Loperamide Tablet 2 mg

Description

Loperamide 2 mg is an oral tablet containing Loperamide Hydrochloride, an antidiarrheal agent. It works by slowing intestinal movement and increasing water/electrolyte absorption in the gut, reducing the frequency and urgency of bowel movements. It acts on opioid receptors in the gut wall, with minimal central nervous system effects at therapeutic doses.

Advantages

  • Effective Diarrhea Relief: Rapidly and effectively alleviates symptoms of acute and chronic diarrhea.
  • Reduces Stool Frequency and Volume: Significantly decreases the number of bowel movements and their watery consistency.
  • Increases Stool Consistency: Helps to make stools firmer.
  • Reduces Fluid Loss: Aids in preventing dehydration by enhancing water and electrolyte reabsorption.
  • Non-Sedating: Generally does not cause drowsiness or CNS depression at recommended doses.
  • Readily Available: Often available over-the-counter for acute, non-specific diarrhea.

Uses

Loperamide 2 mg is primarily used for the symptomatic treatment of various types of diarrhea:

  • Acute Non-Specific Diarrhea: Short-term relief for sudden onset diarrhea in adults and children (usually 6 years and older).
  • Chronic Diarrhea: Management of long-term diarrhea associated with conditions like inflammatory bowel disease or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D), under medical supervision.
  • Traveler’s Diarrhea: To reduce symptoms of diarrhea acquired during travel.
  • Ileostomy Patients: To reduce the volume of discharge from an ileostomy.

Nature

Loperamide is an opioid receptor agonist that acts selectively on mu-opioid receptors in the intestinal wall. It inhibits the release of acetylcholine and prostaglandins, thereby decreasing intestinal motility and increasing transit time. This allows for greater reabsorption of water and electrolytes, reducing stool frequency and fluidity. Its poor penetration of the blood-brain barrier at standard doses limits CNS effects.

Storage

  • Room Temperature: Store between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F).
  • Protect from Light and Moisture: Keep in the original, tightly closed container or blister pack, away from direct light, heat, and humidity (avoid bathrooms).
  • Keep Out of Reach of Children: Store securely to prevent accidental ingestion, which can be dangerous.
  • Do Not Freeze: Freezing can affect stability and effectiveness.
  • Check Expiry Date: Do not use past the expiry date. Dispose of properly.

Precautions

  • Do NOT use if fever or bloody stools are present. This may indicate a serious infection that requires different treatment.
  • Do NOT use for more than 2 days without consulting a doctor. Prolonged use or use in severe infections can worsen conditions.
  • Not for children under 6 years old unless directed by a doctor.
  • Stop use and consult a doctor if diarrhea worsens or persists, or if abdominal swelling occurs.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose. High doses can lead to serious heart problems.
  • Use with caution in patients with liver problems.
  • Can cause constipation, dizziness, or drowsiness.
  • Stay hydrated. Loperamide helps reduce fluid loss but proper hydration is still essential.
