Calcium Gluconate Injection 100 mg/mL

🔹 Generic Name:

Calcium Gluconate

🔹 Strength & Formulation:

  • 100 mg/mL
  • Typically supplied in 10 mL vials or ampoules (i.e., 1 gram per 10 mL)

📌 Description:

Calcium gluconate is a calcium salt used to treat or prevent calcium deficiency. It is less irritating than calcium chloride and is commonly used in emergencies like hypocalcemia and hyperkalemia.

Indications / Uses:

IndicationPurpose
Hypocalcemia (low calcium)Restores normal serum calcium levels
HyperkalemiaStabilizes cardiac membrane potential
HypermagnesemiaReverses magnesium toxicity
Calcium channel blocker overdoseCounteracts drug effects
Cardiac resuscitation (as needed)In some ACLS protocols

💊 Dosage & Administration:

Route: IV only
Form: 10% calcium gluconate = 100 mg/mL (i.e., 1 gram = 10 mL)

Use CaseAdult Dose
Hypocalcemia1–2 grams IV slowly over 10–20 min
Hyperkalemia (with ECG changes)10 mL IV of 10% solution over 2–5 min
Calcium channel blocker overdose3–6 grams IV (may repeat if needed)

IV Push only with extreme care and ECG monitoring. Avoid extravasation (can cause tissue necrosis).

Advantages:

  • Immediate correction of acute calcium deficiency
  • Stabilizes myocardium in hyperkalemia
  • Less irritant than calcium chloride
  • Safer for peripheral IV administration

⚠️ Precautions & Warnings:

Risk FactorPrecaution
ExtravasationCauses severe tissue damage
Digitalis therapyRisk of arrhythmias—avoid rapid IV push
Renal impairmentRisk of hypercalcemia
NeonatesCaution due to immature renal clearance
AlkalosisCan reduce ionized calcium effect
