Nature
Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA). Its primary mechanism of action involves increasing the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, primarily serotonin and norepinephrine, by blocking their reuptake into nerve cells. This action helps to modulate mood, pain perception, and sleep. At lower doses, its pain-relieving and sleep-inducing effects become more prominent due to its impact on various neurochemical pathways and its anticholinergic and antihistaminic properties.
