Metoclopramide Tablet 10 mg

Metoclopramide Tablet 10 mg

Description

Metoclopramide 10 mg is an oral tablet containing the active ingredient Metoclopramide Hydrochloride. It is a dopamine receptor antagonist that primarily acts as an antiemetic (anti-nausea and vomiting) and a prokinetic agent (promotes gastric emptying). It works by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain and enhancing the movement of the upper gastrointestinal tract, thereby reducing nausea, vomiting, and feelings of fullness.

Advantages

  • Effective Antiemetic: Highly effective in preventing and treating various types of nausea and vomiting.
  • Prokinetic Action: Accelerates gastric emptying, which helps relieve symptoms of gastroparesis and reflux.
  • Broad Spectrum: Useful for chemotherapy-induced nausea, diabetic gastroparesis, and post-operative nausea.
  • Oral Convenience: Easy to administer in tablet form.

Uses

Metoclopramide 10 mg is commonly used for:

  • Nausea and Vomiting: Prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting, including that associated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and post-operative states.
  • Diabetic Gastroparesis: Management of slow stomach emptying in patients with diabetes, which can cause nausea, vomiting, heartburn, and bloating.
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Short-term treatment of symptomatic reflux where other measures are insufficient (less common as a primary treatment now).
  • Facilitating Small Bowel Intubation: To speed up the passage of a tube into the small intestine for diagnostic purposes.

Nature

Metoclopramide is a dopamine D2 receptor antagonist. Its primary mechanisms of action are:

  1. Antiemetic Effect: It blocks dopamine D2 receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) in the brain, which is an area that initiates vomiting when stimulated by toxins or drugs.
  2. Prokinetic Effect: It enhances the release of acetylcholine in the gastrointestinal tract, leading to increased tone and amplitude of gastric contractions, relaxation of the pyloric sphincter, and increased peristalsis in the small intestine. This accelerates gastric emptying and transit through the small bowel without stimulating gastric or biliary secretions. It does not affect colonic motility.

Storage

  • Room Temperature: Store Metoclopramide 10 mg tablets at controlled room temperature, typically between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F).
  • Protect from Light and Moisture: Keep the tablets in their original, tightly closed container, away from direct light, heat, and excessive humidity.
  • Keep Out of Reach of Children: Store the medication in a secure place, out of sight and reach of children and pets.
  • Do Not Freeze: Do not freeze the tablets.
  • Check Expiry Date: Do not use the medication after the expiry date.

Precautions

  • Risk of Tardive Dyskinesia (TD): This is a serious, potentially irreversible movement disorder. The risk increases with higher doses and longer duration of treatment. Treatment duration should generally not exceed 12 weeks.
  • Extrapyramidal Symptoms (EPS): Can cause involuntary movements like muscle spasms, restlessness, or tremors, especially in children and young adults.
  • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS): A rare but potentially fatal reaction characterized by fever, muscle rigidity, altered mental status.
  • Contraindicated in Pheochromocytoma: Can cause hypertensive crisis.
  • Avoid in GI Obstruction/Perforation: Do not use if there is gastrointestinal hemorrhage, obstruction, or perforation.
  • Use with caution in renal or hepatic impairment: Dose adjustment may be necessary.
  • May cause drowsiness: Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medications, especially other dopamine-blocking drugs, anticholinergics, or CNS depressants.
